89. Capoeira of Mozambique – What follows is a series of photos and a brief description of my exposure to Capoeira in Mozambique. With the existence of a number of Capoeira academies in neighboring South Africa as well, one can truly say that Capoeira (originally of Bantu origin) has returned to its source and has been enthusiastically welcomed by the descendants of its original  creators.

Ginga de Maputo – a mixed Angola and Regional group - is the oldest and largest Capoeira group in Mozambique. It was founded on March 4th, 1999 by Professora Marina Mative (a Mozambican) who studied Capoeira for ten years in Denmark at the Sereia do Mar Academy. She established and ran the Ginga de Maputo academy until 2005 after which time she suffered a debilitating back injury. In 2005 Sales (presently a contra-mestre with the war name Chaminé) took over instruction and later this task passed to Ivan (pictured below seated next to the jembe drummer).
